10 Easy AND Healthy Snacks

July 05, 2018

Snacking between meals has been given such a bad rap these days. We (me included in that “we”) often associate it with the inability to control our urge to eat. The good news is, it depends on what the snack is! Snacks can be great little pick-me ups we can use for that mid-afternoon slump to get more energy. Plus (and I think this is the biggest perk of snacking) it can help us to control the urge to overeat at meal time! Here are a few of my favorite healthy snacks I like to keep on hand:

  1. Bananas - This is my most favorite snack. If you look in my purse, guess what you’ll find... Bananas are a great source of potassium and help stabilize blood pressure. They also contain nutrients that moderate blood sugar!
  2. Almonds- Almonds are a great source of vitamin e and are great for cardiovascular health. It can also help lower cholesterol levels.
  3. Greek yogurt - Greek yogurt is a great source of protein which is important for muscle growth, cell growth, and repairing tissue. It contains probiotics that help keep us regular and b12 to give us the boost we need to get through the day!
  4. Larabar - They have a great line of yummy power bars. My personal favorite is the Peanut butter chocolate chip cookie bar. These guys have only four ingredients - and you can actually pronounce them all. Don’t let the sugar in this bar scare you! The sugar content comes from dates which are a naturally low glycemic index food.
  5. Blueberries - These little guys prevent heart disease and cancer. They can also maintain bone strength, mental health, and good blood pressure.
  6. Avocados - Avocados are loaded with mono saturated fatty acids that are good for the heart. They are also loaded with fiber and can help lower cholesterol. Plus, guacamole... Need I say more?
  7. Sargento Balanced Snacks - Okay, so these are the greatest things ever. When you are in a hurry and need to grab a quick snack because you didn’t meal prep them the night before, these are awesome. There are several different varieties, but they all contain either nuts, dried fruits, cheese, and more! Don’t even get me started on the ones with the little chocolates in them. They are delicious! Plus, when you have a sweet tooth, eating a few chocolates is better than eating an entire piece of cake! It is great for sweets cravings. Nuts contain unsaturated fats as well as omega-3 fatty acids and vitamin e which are all great for the heart! The cheese is a great source of protein and calcium, and it contains CLA’s (conjugated linoleic acids)  that have anti-cancer and heart benefits.
  8. Hummus - Hummus is said to have anti-inflammatory properties and is rich in plant protein. It protects heart and bone health and is high in vitamins and minerals! It is also great for intestinal health and the digestive system. Take your favorite vegetable and dip away!
  9. Eggs - One of my favorite things to eat is simply a boiled egg covered in black pepper. Eggs are a great inexpensive source of protein and are rich in vitamins and minerals!
  10. Raw veggies - I love them so much I couldn’t pick just one. They are all loaded to the brim with vitamins! They help reduce the risk of many diseases and help you feel good and energized throughout the day. They are naturally low in calories and high in fiber!
