6 Reasons to Try Belly Dance
July 05, 2018
Belly dance is one of the oldest forms of dance originating from the Eastern World and Middle East. There are differing opinions on whether or not belly dance originated as a religious dance performance or for fertility rites/childbirth practices. Today it is a great way to stay in shape as well as meet dancers from around the world who share a love of belly dance. I have become very passionate about belly dance over the past seven years. It is more than just a hobby, it has become a part of who I am. Here are 6 reasons I believe everyone should at least try belly dance:
1. Belly dance keeps you in shape. It is a great activity for your heart and lungs, and it is known to improve posture. It is a low-impact workout and can increase flexibility, balance, and strength. It will also help strengthen your core! How is that for a great workout? Now for the big question I'm frequently asked - Will it help me lose weight? Combined with a healthy diet, various other cardio activities, and maintaining a calorie deficit, it is possible to lose weight while belly dancing! One intense hour of belly dance can burn up to 300 calories!
2. Belly dance is empowering! Need body confidence? Belly dance can help! Every woman regardless of size, shape, and/or body type can belly dance. There is no specific "type" of belly dance body. Belly dance was specifically created for women's (not ONE woman's body) bodies, so every body is a belly dancer body! If you have a little more to love, work it! Embrace it! The more you have, the more you've got to shake which is great when you are belly dancing.
3. You never stop learning. There is always something to learn in belly dance. There are challenging moves for those who have mastered the basics. For those who take classes, you can always try public performances which are nerve-wracking and exhilarating at the same time. There are also many styles of belly dance - Egyptian, Turkish, Fusion, Tribal, ATS... You can even learn to dance with props like veils, zills, fans, and isis wings!
4. You make friends who enjoy belly dance too! The entire reason I took dance was to get out of the house and feel more like myself after the birth of my son. I had no idea I would make the friends and find the supportive group of women that I did! We love one another, and we support one another and celebrate not only dance triumphs, but life's triumphs as well. We also love and console one another through life's struggles. Two years ago I had a miscarriage, and my dance ladies were there for me and helped me through it!
5. You feel pretty. If you want to get pretty and dressed up so you can dance the night away, belly dance is for you! The costumes are amazing, and if you are talented enough you can even sew your own! Remember how I said there were different styles of dance? Well those different dance styles have different styles of costumes as well! You can be flirty in your shiny, blingy cabaret outfit or edgy and sexy in your fishnet tribal ensemble. Getting ready with my friends is one of my favorite parts of being a belly dancer. We laugh, listen to music, and have tons of fun!
6. It's a great stress reducer! Had a bad day? Dance! Stressed out about work? Dance! Dance is not only my creative outlet, it is also a big stress reducer to me. I know that I can leave my troubles at the door and dance them away.
